Shipwrecked off Salvador, passengers stumble upon a murder. They are

conspiracy, but fall victim to kidnappers who hold their women hostage.

Synopsis:
Shipwrecked on the coast of Brazil, William and Charles stumble upon a
murder at a sugar plantation after renegade slaves abduct their wives.
Pursued as killers through the countryside, the refugees uncover a
landowner conspiracy to overthrow the Regency by using a blood
experiment to eliminate eight-year old Dom Pedro II.
William discovers
that their wives are to be used donors in an attempt to transfer
cholera immunity, sixty years before blood typing. Racing to stop the
test, William makes a harrowing journey into the Chapada Diamentina
canyon under the influence of a hallucinogenic Indian potion before the
resulting visions nearly cost him his life. Arriving in Rio, he finds
only bloodstains and a waiting assassin before a final confrontation at
the Coelho plantation, where slaves lay siege to the house.
